Last night while the rest of us were distracted with Modern Family or American Idol the First Lady Michelle Obama was the center of opulence at the White House state dinner, in honor of Chinese President Hu Jintao. The First Lady made a statement in a gorgeous red silk organza gown from Alexander McQueen’s Resort “11 collection created by his successor, Sarah Burton. Some might argue that First Lady Obama should have gone with an Asian American designer for this particular event but I would have to disagree. The gown she wore from this collection is an inspiration from the film La Reine Margot, and isn’t fit for Queen!?
The color itself has meaningful significance in the Chinese culture. Red means good luck, wealth and prosperity to the Chinese which was not overlooked by the First Lady. With the Chinese New Year on February 3rd being just around the corner I’m sure Michelle Obama considered this when making her gown selection for the State dinner.
